Name: Chiron, Captain of the Lunar Guard (semi-retired), High Praetorian of the Royal Sisters, Representative of Hollow Shades in the Lunar Court
Age: Mid-sixties
Sex: Male
Gender: Male
Species: Pony
Sub-species/race: Unicorn
Physical Appearance: Chiron is on the larger side for a unicorn, leaning more towards a typical royal guard’s or Shining Armor’s general body shape. He is an ashy gray color, with a scar here and there on his sturdy body. His mane and tail are cropped to guard regulations and are a deep midnight purple, although they are now fading with age. His eyes would be a bright, piercing golden yellow if not for the cataracts forming in his them; his sight has been impairing more and more over the years. Not to say he can’t see, but lately he needs to have things moved close up to his face to be able to see them clearly. On his chin is a small scruff of a beard, which is a lighter gray than the rest of his coat.
When on duty, Chiron wears the armor of a night guard, except on his, the tail scrunchie and blanket are purple. The armor is also a more purple tone, looking more akin to the armor Luna’s bat-ponies wear. His cutie mark is often obscured by his armor, but it is a purple moon with an arrow notched into it as if the moon was a bow.
Personality: Chiron is quite an intelligent stallion, greatly experienced in what he does. If he’s not practicing drills with the night guards, you’ll usually find him with books or scrolls. Of course, he’s not able to read as much as he used to without assistance due to his impaired sight, but he still tries. He’ll read any source on battlefield tactics he can find, but once in a while you can find him skimming over a trashy romance novel. He rarely enters combat himself these days, instead being the one to plan things out from a distance. He knows he’s in the autumn of his life, but he still tries to do as much as his cataracts will let him.
Chiron wants his soldiers to be the best that they can be, and as a result sometimes comes across as a bit intimidating. There are stories of him making particularly rowdy and insubordinate guards pull carts that only oxen or the strongest draft horses could manage up Canterlot mountain as punishment. However, be on his good side, and Chiron will mostly just poke fun at you for screwing up and maybe just subject you to his terrible old guy jokes. He will very willingly take new recruits under his wing and mentor them, especially if they show a particular enthusiasm and will to learn. Don’t take this as something kind and sweet, though: Chiron works his guards very hard and will not hesitate to point out that a lot of reasoning behind why many ponies decide to join the guard is based upon misconceptions.
Special talent*: His tactical prowess. He got his position for a reason, and it wasn’t because he could rattle off guard protocols and merely sound intelligent. He has a knack for rolling with the punches, and if his first plan is easily countered he can often notice it and quickly bounce back.
Family*: None currently living. He has not been married, nor does he have any children.
Goals, ambitions, aspirations*: Chiron’s main goal at this stage in his life is to serve Equestria the best he can before he gets too old to perform his duties any longer. He’s also on the lookout among his best colts for a replacement, as well as looking to train and mentor any new recruits that come his way.
Strengths: Chiron has an adept tactical mind and very rarely loses his cool even when things aren’t in his favor. He’s also good at teaching and explaining things to his subordinates.
Obvious weaknesses or vulnerabilities: Chiron’s emerging cataracts have really done a number on his ability to do any direct fighting. He isn’t completely blind, it’s just that things that aren’t right in his face appear blurry to him. He’s getting old, and is not as spry as he used to be.
History: Named after a legendary member of Tirek’s race who mentored many ancient heroes of the past, Chiron was found at an orphanage in Hollow Shades in a basket and with a small note that stated his name and a request for the runners of the orphanage to take good care of him. Nobody was ever able to trace back the source of the note, and to this day Chiron has no idea who his parents were. Unlike some orphans, this was not a source of angst and tragedy for him. It wasn’t hard for him to understand, even from such a young age, that he was better off at the orphanage than being with a parent or parents that knew they wouldn’t be able to adequately take care of him. Chiron got his cutie mark a little later than the average foal and got it when he applied strategy that he read about in a story of one of Commander Hurricane’s battles to a pretend game of war with his friends.
Sadly, Chiron was never adopted. After he came to age in the orphanage, he knew his time there was ending and that actually did make things a little difficult for him in his later teen years. However, he wasn’t going to give up. He was going to show that he could do something meaningful, and his lucky day came when he found a poster for the Royal Guard recruitment office. He packed his bags, went to Canterlot, and after he filled out the necessary paperwork and underwent a few medical tests to ensure he was healthy, he was shipped off to boot camp. After completing boot camp he officially entered the royal guard as a private. This was several decades before Luna returned from the moon, so he spent much of his time under Celestia’s command.
After the return of Nightmare Moon and her redemption, Chiron was a captain of a company that was part of the night guard. He was transferred under Luna’s command, and is in charge of the night guards to this day. Throughout his time as a royal guard, Chiron has had to deal with everything from petty thieves to Marefia bosses and other leaders of more organized crime. He’s always been curious about what has compelled these ponies to live such a lifestyle, but he can’t help but feel that he would be in their shoes had he not become a guard.
Recently, Chiron was awarded with the honorary title of High Praetorian, a title bestowed upon veteran guards whose long years of service and educating of those below them have bettered the country as a whole.
Place of Residence: Moves back and forth between Canterlot, Hollow Shades, and a fort near the border of the Crystal Empire. Mostly, you will find him in Canterlot.
Other*: Some of Chiron’s interests outside of guard things are music, collecting fine wines, and the cuisines of Equestria and other nations. The books and scrolls on his shelves that aren’t about battlefield tactics or overly sappy tales of romance are typically records of cultural gastronomies and traditions.
